About

I obtained a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1992, and have been in private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Austin, Texas since 1996, counseling individuals for mental health and career issues and couples for relationship counseling. I have taught counseling graduate students at several universities in the Austin/San Antonio area, and am an LPC-approved Supervisor. I have conducted seminars and workshops on relationship topics for community audiences. Currently, I am co-leading a “success support” group.

I became a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist in 2008, using therapy techniques derived from John Gottman’s research on the factors that distinguish happy from unhappy couples in long-term relationships. His therapy process is derived from findings from three decades of research with over 3,000 couples. The certification process involved extensive on-site trainings at the Gottman Institute, two years of supervision from a master Certified Gottman Couples Therapist, and passing six videotape reviews by the Gottman Institute.

My specialty areas in couples therapy are counseling couples with infidelity and conflict issues. I believe I am able to empathize with the grief and trauma involved in these areas and to help guide couples to a place of understanding, healing, and decision-making in how to move forward. I also enjoy teaching the principles of what makes relationships succeed to “new couples” and to those couples who recognize that their relationship can be tweaked early on before negativity becomes too entrenched. On average, couples wait about six years before they come into therapy, after having developed significant problems in their relationship. I hope you will give me the opportunity to work with you long before these problems dominate your relationship.
