About
The adult couple which makes the most progress with me is the one in which both partners desire a "new life" together. In this "new life", success outnumbers failure, hope exceeds fear, and confidence outweighs self-doubt and doubt of the other. This couple humbly accepts that a "new life" requires giving up the old, negative, automatic narrative about "what was done to me". In its place, the couple realizes that a new narrative about "who I want to be and do" involves accepting full responsibility for the genesis of his/her thoughts, feelings and actions. In other words, the adult couple who works best with me is willing to "grow up".
I am a fully-licensed psychologist with a practical, yet, deeply meaningful approach to psychotherapy. I integrate psychodynamic theory (for increasing awareness) with cognitive-behavioral techniques (for breaking the hold of old, previously helpful , cognitions). All of this is couched within the framework of positive psychology, the new science of thriving. That is why the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy appeals to me. Its methods are in alignment with my overall psychotherapeutic approach. It has been helpful in my own marriage as well as those with whom I counsel.
One unique element of my practice is the 3-Second Present Momentâ„¢ mindfulness technique. I created this process to help clients distinguish regrets of the past and fears of the future from the peace of the present. It takes effort, but with practice, clients see greater hope for "new life".
