As a veteran therapist, I have worked with many individuals who wanted to improve their relationships. Sometimes that meant developing a better relationship with oneself. Other times that meant developing better relationships with those important others: parents, children, siblings, friends, and life partners. At the beginning of my career, my work with couples was based on a “wing and a prayer”, which had mixed results. Wanting to develop a more consistently successful intervention, I was intrigued by the research-based approach the Gottmans offered. I entered their training programs, working through the Level 3 training, and added training on specific topics, such as Affairs and Substance Use. I have also had experience with the Imago Therapy approach, which is theoretically compatible with the Gottman Method. I follow the protocol as prescribed by the Gottman’s where I first meet with a couple to gather history and background information. I then meet with each partner individually to gather their history and thoughts about the relationship. We meet together again to discuss my feedback and the couple’s input about the relationship strengths and areas of improvement that are needed and formulate an initial treatment plan. Then we roll up our sleeves and get to work learning and using the various Gottman tools and techniques to address the goals.
