Couples typically combine their lives because—at some level—they feel better in each other's presence than they feel around anyone else. That feeling can change over time, such that the relationship no longer feels safe, loving, accepting, respectful, or secure. The good news is that those feelings can usually be restored.
Within the pattern formed by a couple are practices that are effective for forming close relational bonds, and practices that are ineffective—in any relationship—which can be identified, excised, and replaced.
Dr. Gottman's research has provided language for patterns that destroy relationships, and language for patterns that nourish and restore relationships.
I would love to help you discover your particular pattern, and to strengthen your marital bond.
In my counseling approach, I incorporate thirty years of interdisciplinary experience in social work, ordained ministry, and counseling. Specific therapeutic interventions brought to bear include: Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Attachment theory, potentially Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) (where called for to treat trauma), Spiritual Direction, and Enneagram Coaching.
In addition to couples therapy, I would be happy to help your organization host a Gottman Institute program—either "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work," or "Bringing Baby Home."
Personally speaking, my marriage of over thirty-five years and the raising of three children has provided a practical understanding of the struggles and joys of marriage.
