About

After over 35 years in private practice and working extensively with individuals, families, schools and businesses, Dr. Turchetta brought a team of highly qualified clinicians together into one facility and founded Strategic Psychological Services (SPS) in January 2014. With his varied experiential background in the field of psychology, Dr. Turchetta utilizes the latest and most effective evidence-based psychological counseling techniques to empower his clients to change their worldview.

Dr. Turchetta taught courses in psychology and philosophy at several institutions of higher learning such as the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. As a consultant to many school systems in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Dr. Turchetta focused on preventative systemic change though innovative programs he designed and implemented from pre-school through high school. In addition, Dr. Turchetta worked as a supervisor in a drug and alcohol program for 10 years, dealing with the challenging issues of addiction.

Dr. Turchetta also currently works as part of Narva & Company’s multidisciplinary advisory team, where he assists family ownership groups and business partnerships to address relationship issues between and among generations, navigate business change and avoid emotional minefields that can undermine sound business decisions

Dr. Turchetta has been active in governance of the American Psychological Association (APA), as well as the state affiliate of the Rhode Island Psychological Association (RIPA) for over 25 years. He recently completed his term as the Rhode Island state representative to the APA Council of Representatives and has been involved for many years at the national level in setting policy for psychologists. He was elected to the presidency of the RIPA and served on the RIPA board for many years. He is currently a member of Division 13 (Consulting Psychology), Division 16 (School Psychology) and Division 42 (Independent Practice) of the APA.

Dr. Turchetta received a Doctorate in Psychology from Boston University. He is licensed as a psychologist in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and is a long standing member of the National Register of Health Insurance Providers in Psychology.

Family Counseling

Sometimes, the focus of therapy isn’t just one individual, but the entire family. Family problems such as troubled relationships between members, financial concerns, parent and child conflicts, and addiction are common occurrences that can have a significant impact on every individual in the family system by causing stress, anger and conflict.

Family therapy can begin to heal the family as a whole by recognizing and changing interaction patterns and styles of functioning that may be fueling continuous discord. At SPS, our goal is to bring families closer together by helping members improve communication, resolve conflicts and deepen connections both in the short term and after therapy is completed for a lasting impact.

Marriage and Couples Counseling (Gottman-trained)

Relationships can be challenging and, during difficult times, many couples seek therapeutic intervention to provide guidance, communication skills, and mediation that help strengthen relational ties. Rather than refereeing conflicts or “fixing” partners, our Gottman-trained staff leverage 40 years of compelling research with over 3,000 couples to effectively guide couples across the chasm that divides them.

Couples will learn the skills to:

compassionately manage their conflicts
deepen their intimacy
empower dialogue
process their fights and heal their hurts

With effective strategies to resolve their struggles, couples will have the foundation to reconnect and strengthen their relationships.

Child and Adolescent Counseling

Children and adolescents experience emotional difficulties, too, including frustration, depression, risky behavior, self-esteem issues and anger. But, often, they are unable to express their feelings so their challenges manifest in less direct ways. For example, young people may act out their problems, exhibit behavioral disturbances or internalize their issues and isolate or withdraw. Yet all of these behaviors may be signs that a child or teen needs help understanding what they are experiencing and developing skills to address their psychological problems before they become crises.

Through therapy, SPC clinicians can help children and adolescents navigate their developmental challenges by providing emotional support and the coping and communication skills needed to alleviate distress, based on their unique needs.

Holistic and Lifestyle Counseling

Holistic psychotherapy utilizes traditional and non-traditional therapies to integrate the mind, body and spirit and help clients reach the deepest level of healing possible, including:

traditional talk psychotherapy
hypnosis
heart-centered hypnotherapy/regression therapy
breath therapy
rebirthing breath
guided imagery

At SPS, clinicians licensed in clinical social work, clinical counseling, or psychology and certified in advanced clinical hypnotherapy provide integrative psychotherapy and counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups. Our work is personal and compassionate, yet also direct and actionable. We use a solution-focused, "hands-on, can-do" approach to teach clients skills for engaging in regular positive psychological practices that promote wellness and vital engagement in life while simultaneously supporting relapse prevention.
