Dr. Leighton received her PhD in clinical psychology from The City College of New York (City University of New York) and received additional training in The Psychological Center at City College. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Hudson Valley Veterans Administration Hospital, working with veterans in the PTSD residential treatment program and other veterans seeking outpatient treatment for depression, anxiety, substance abuse and relationship problems. She has extensive experience working with people recovering from complex and acute trauma, helping them regain peace, re-engage with their emotions, improve their relationships, and reduce symptoms of psychological distress.
Dr. Leighton's work with couples draws from Gottman Method Couples Therapy in which she is trained. She is also trained in Sensate Focus, a widely-used therapy for sexual problems. Her work with families is based on principles from Family Systems and Structural Family Therapy.
Dr. Leighton serves as a clinical supervisor for doctoral students at CUNY's City College.
