For over 30 years, I have worked in a variety of areas in the counseling field. My first position was in an inpatient private psychiatric hospital in Florida; after 4 years in that position, I began working with alcoholics and addicts on both in and outpatient units. Teaching DUI classes in two different states and conducting formal interventions rounded out my understanding and love for the field of addiction. As a recovering alcoholic and addict who was put into treatment with an intervention 32 years ago, I am a big believer in the intervention process; it saves lives and I love conducting them.
Since opening my private practice in August of 2011, one of my primary areas of interest and expertise has been working with adults and older teens that have a dual diagnosis of addiction and a mood disorder. I also help clients deal with gambling, spending, sex and internet addictions. The only addictions that I refer to my fellow therapist network are eating disorders. I am a big supporter of the 12 Step Community but also allow clients to choose their own paths.
Since discovering the Gottman Method of working with couples, couples work has become my passion. I love the interventions and the structure of the method and am currently working toward certification. I have completed Levels 1, 2 and 3 of training, as well as, some specialty trainings and enjoy teaching couples to communicate more effectively and find new levels of trust and intimacy in their lives together. I believe that humor is mandatory; if you can't laugh at yourself (and each other) you cannot have a happy relationship. Humor heals our souls and repairs relationships.
Helping my clients to discover their values and work toward building a value driven life; learn to accept and hold loosely uncomfortable emotions and become fully engaged in the present moment is a guiding principle of which I am ever mindful. Each person is the expert on his or herself and each person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect as they navigate their life's journey. I am honored to go along for the ride.
In addition to counseling, I am also board certified as an individual and executive coach. When wearing the coaching hat, I am able to help clients to start new careers or become more effective in their careers. Working with employers to help them with onboarding, training or derailed employees is another side of the coaching role.
My practice is called GJB Health Services because my initials are GJB (Gloria Jean Bannasch) and also because those are my husband and partner’s initials (Gerald John Bannasch). Gerald has been practicing with me for the past two years as a psychiatrist, neurologist and neuropsychiatrist; he is able to provide medication management for our clients and to provide a complete medical assessment to rule out other etiologies that may appear to be depression, dementia or a host of other illnesses.
Also practicing at GJB Health Services are three other licensed professional counselors; their areas of expertise are trauma, sexual issues and working with clients aided by horses and other animals. We are also fortunate to have an addictions specialist in training with us. In addition to clinical staff, we have three young women who are in 3 separate masters of counseling programs who provide clerical support and also work with clients who would otherwise not be able to afford therapy. We really do have services for everyone here at GJB Health Services.
