I have conducted 44 years of research on marital stability, divorce prediction and what makes relationships work. Utilizing this research with thousands of couples, my wife Dr. Julie Gottman and I created Gottman Method Couples Therapy. We use the Sound Relationship House Theory as a framework to treat couples, educate clinicians, and write about what makes relationships succeed or fail. I have authored more than 210 published academic articles and 45 books. My wife and I present workshops to couples and training to clinicians worldwide.

Marathon Couples Therapy

In my private practice on Orcas Island I work only with couples doing Marathon Couples Therapy. Marathon Couples Therapy is a specific type of therapy that is short-term and intensive. The work involves 3 consecutive days of intensive therapy, 5 hours per day. The structure of each therapy day will vary depending on your needs. Establishing therapeutic goals and a treatment plan to guide your therapy will occur in the first session.

Using our research, Julie and I created Gottman Method Couples Therapy that emphasizes a positive, “nuts and bolts” approach to improving your relationship. With this method, you will learn specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship. To help you manage conflicts, I use various methods to help solve resolvable problems that are solvable, and to dialogue about “grid-locked,” unsolvable, “perpetual issues.” We will also work together to help you appreciate your relationship’s strengths, and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.

Upon completion of the therapy, I will provide recommendations for you as a couple, and if necessary for each of you individually. I may recommend that Marathon Couples' Therapy be followed by couples' therapy conducted in your home locale. In some cases, co-ordination between your therapist and myself and may be advisable.

Couples Group Retreats

Together with my wife Julie, we offer small group weekend Couples Retreats in our Orcas Island home throughout the year. The retreats follow the format of our larger “Art and Science of Love” couples workshop, but limit the group size to 7 couples, which allows us to give much more personalized support during workshop exercises.
