"If you're hurting baby, the whole world stops and I listen." -- John Gottman
Betrayal comes in many forms. Most consider the discovery of emotional or sexual infidelity to be the highest form of betrayal; but other smaller ones can occur on a daily basis. For example, when I turn towards my partner and s/he turns away, I feel betrayed.
Little forms of betrayal can traumatize a marriage just as much as the ultimate betrayal. Feeling hopeless and helpless in your marriage doesn't have to mean the end of your relationship. In fact, it may be the beginning of a new, more satisfying one.
Couples issues include communication, sexual addiction, living with a partner diagnosed with anxiety or depression, substance abuse and addiction.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and I have been helping couples fall in love again for the past 12 years. I know first hand that It is possible to regain the love and connection you once experienced and with the help of a qualified and trained Gottman therapist, you can develop the tools necessary for creating a satisfying and secure relationship.
In therapy, couples learn that re-creating sexual and emotional intimacy is a shared endeavor. This begins with knowing the Four Horseman -- Defensiveness, Criticism, Contempt, and Stonewalling and how to counteract them. Couples also learn how to be able to turn towards each other in times of conflict rather than turning away.
